Centre for Growth, Jobs and Prosperity

The Artha Centre for Growth, Jobs and Prosperity champions broad-based economic growth as the cornerstone of sustained development and improved well-being in developing nations.

About the Centre

Sustained economic growth is the most powerful driver of poverty reduction and improvements in human welfare, far exceeding the impact of aid or targeted development interventions. Yet the prevailing development, aid and philanthropic discourse—and with it, government priorities—has moved away from growth as a central ambition. At the Artha Centre for Growth, Jobs and Prosperity, we re-centre broad-based economic growth as the cornerstone of sustained development and improved well-being in developing nations. We explore multiple paths to broad-based economic growth, addressing key drivers such as productivity enhancement, technological adoption, human capital development, and institutional strengthening. Our focus is on policies that shift labour and resources from low-productivity to high-productivity sectors, tailoring growth strategies to fit local conditions, institutions, and cultural contexts. Growth strategies must also integrate environmental considerations, as economic growth and environmental protection can be complementary through investments in practical renewable energy, green technologies, more compact urban development and fit-for-purpose environmental regulations. As a "pracademic" institution, the Artha Centre for Growth and Prosperity bridges theory and practice. We combine rigorous research with real-world experience to offer evidence-based, pragmatic solutions to foster sustained growth. We support state capability development, organise knowledge-sharing events, and provide practical assistance in designing and implementing growth strategies.
